ESM Golden Shoe: Sonck on song

KRC Genk's Wesley Sonck stated his intent for the 2002/03 ESM Golden Shoe with a six-goal haul.

KRC Genk's Wesley Sonck stated his intent for the 2002/03 ESM Golden Shoe with a six-goal haul at the weekend.

Moving up
The Belgium striker scored a double hat-trick as his side crushed Eerste Klasse opponents KV Mechelen 9-0 on Sunday to move up to fourth in Belgium. Sonck also has two UEFA Champions League goals this season but could not stop Genk being eliminated in the first group stage.

Larsson in third
Sonck is joint 13th in the table of Europe's leading marksmen because most of those at the top have already played full seasons in either Scandinavia or eastern Europe. An exception to this rule is prolific Celtic FC striker Henrik Larsson who is in third spot with 18 goals already in Scotland.

Delayed start
Last season's ESM Golden Shoe winner Mario Jardel had a delayed start to the season with Sporting Clube de Portugal after personal problems kept him away from the pitch until last month. He has hit two league goals so far, after finding the net 42 times last season.

Only the leading five countries (Spain, Italy, Germany, France and England) on the UEFA Ranking have 2 as their multiplier. This is to emphasise the difference in (international) performance level between the clubs from those countries and those from the other countries.

A player cannot first play in a summer league (e.g. Norway) and then in a winter league (e.g. Spain) and combine the points total for each season.
