AEK Athens's Carlos Alberto Gamarra has agreed to join Internazionale FC.

National captain
The Paraguayan team captain is currently preparing for this summer's FIFA World Cup finals in Sweden, where tonight Paraguay take on the host country before travelling to Asia.

Player of the Year
The central defender, voted South American Player of the Year in 1998, is Inter's first signing since they were pipped to the Serie A title on the last day of the season by Juventus FC. During his career, he has played in Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil, before moving to Europe, where he has had spells with SL Benfica and Club Atlético de Madrid.

'Close to coming to Italy'
He revealed on completing the deal that he had almost switched to Serie A sooner. "In 1999, I was close to coming to Italy," Gamarra said. "At that time, I had been contacted by Fabio Capello to join AS Roma."
