Norwegian footballers went on strike today after overnight talks with clubs over working conditions broke down.

Competitions suspended
The strike involving 203 players at 15 different clubs is the first ever among Norwegian footballers and meant that all Tippeligaen and first division matches are to be postponed. Norwegian Football Associaition (NFF) general secretary Karen Espelund said: "This conflict leads to uneven conditions for for the clubs to compete in our tournaments and therefore the only reasonable thing to do is to suspend some of our competitions."

Players' demands
The players, negotiating with employers' group NHO, which represents the clubs, are demanding improved insurance and contract terms, a new system for transfers and copyrights to their name and picture.

'Soccer strike'
"NISO and NHO/the clubs did not come to an agreement during the negotiations in Oslo," read a statement from players group NISO. "That means a soccer strike." The first games to be affected will be today's top-flight matches between FK Bodø/Glimt and IK Start, Sogndal IL and Molde FK, Stabæk IF and Moss FK, Vålerenga Fotball and Bryne FK and Viking FK's game against SFK Lyn, which were all scheduled to kick off at 15.00CET.
