'Best for the club'
Another statement posted on the club's website earlier in the day had broken the news of Halvorsen's departure: "Jan Halvor Halvorsen and the board at Start have agreed that it is best for the club if Jan Halvor leaves his position as coach of the club."
Poor Start
The Kristiansand club have had a poor first season back in the Tippeligaen after winning promotion last year. They are bottom of the table and have managed just a single victory in 13 games, conceding 32 goals in the process.
Critical of board
Halvorsen, who is regarded as one of the brightest young coaches in Norway, had been critical of the board's decision to sell his best players before the season started. He said: "It is true that I resigned, I would have done it when my contract expires in a few months anyway. I had no intention of renewing it." Thordarson's first league assignment will be the home clash with fellow strugglers Sogndal IL on 21 July.
