Austria round-up: Kärnten limit Wien to a point

Title favourites FK Austria Wien were held to a 1-1 draw at FC Kärnten on Tuesday.

FK Austria Wien's second match of the new Austrian Bundesliga season ended in a 1-1 draw at FC Kärnten tonight.

Title favourites
Wien have been widely tipped to win this season's championship after signing a host of players in the summer from relegated champions FC Tirol Innsbruck. Tirol were demoted to the Austrian third division despite winning the league because of their parlous financial position.

Akoto opener
Wien looked to be living up to expectations when they took the lead in the 13th minute through an Eric Akoto header. However, Akoto's goal, from a Vladimir Janocko free-kick, came just a minute after Almedin Hota had missed two great chances from close range to put Kärnten ahead.

Vorderegger equalises
The home side, who slumped to a 3-0 defeat against SV Pasching in their opening match, equalised on the stroke of half-time when Heimo Vorderegger charged down an attempted clearance from Akoto before firing home. Kärnten created another great chance to steal the points in the 76th minute but Walter Kogler somehow headed wide from point-blank range.

Wien denied
Wien, who have qualified for this season's UEFA Cup, also had a late chance to notch a winner but the Kärnten goalkeeper, Roland Goriupp, with the help of a post, kept out Janocko's effort.
