Slovakian first division champions MŠK Zilina got their title defence off to a winning start against last season's runners-up ŠKM Púchov thanks to an injury time goal from Martin Laurinc.
Late intervention
Home side Zilina scored the first goal of the game in the 37th minute through a Marek Mintal penalty, but Jozef Bugala equalised midway through the second half for Púchov, only for Laurinc's late intervention to ensure a 2-1 victory for the 2001/02 title winners.
Newcomers win
Top-flight newcomers FC Spartak Trnava secured an opening 3-0 win against the renamed FK Laugaricio Trencín. Vladimir Kozuch scored in the 42nd minute, Pavol Stano added a second 20 minutes later and the third goal was scored 12 minutes from the end by Marián Molnár.
Slovan denied
ŠK Slovan Bratislava were denied victory in the dying seconds of their home match with MŠK Ruzomberok. Robert Vittek gave Slovan a 43rd-minute lead, which they held until moments from full time, when Robert Rak equalised to ensure the points were shared.
Loj levels
FC Artmedia Petrzalka's visit to 1. FC Košice also finished 1-1 after two goals in the last minute of the first half. Tomas Medved put the away team ahead, only for Marcel Loj to level the scores almost straight away.
