Derby victory
The champions left Tolka Park with their tails between their legs after Paul Keegan and Glenn Crowe struck within five first-half minutes to give Stephen Kenny's side an unassailable lead. Richie Baker pulled a goal back ten minutes from time, but it was too little too late for Pat Fenlon's side.
Cork comeback
Comebacks were the order of the day at Turner's Cross as home side Cork City FC overturned a 2-0 deficit to secure a 3-2 victory against Shamrock Rovers FC. James Keddy and Noel Hunt had put Rovers into a commanding lead with goals either side of half-time, before Billy Woods scored twice against his old club to level matters. Substitute James Mulligan then made the headlines with the winner on 66 minutes.
Late equaliser
To complete a miserable night for the Dublin clubs, Saint Patrick's Athletic FC conceded a last-minute goal to draw 2-2 at home to Longford Town FC. A tenth-minute Paul Dillon own goal was cancelled out by Seamus Crowe's strike for Longford before half-time, but Tony Bird's 83rd-minute effort looked to have won it for the hosts until Paddy Mulvihill's late intervention.
Bray battle on
Elsewhere, Bray Wanderers AFC fought back from 3-1 down to rescue a point at home to Derry City FC at the Carlisle Grounds. The home side actually took the lead after 14 minutes, when striker Jason Byrne scored from close range but the visitors fought back with defender Sean Hargan registering twice to put Kevin Mahon's men in front at half-time.
Two for Byrne
Ex-Republic Of Ireland international David Kelly increased Derry's lead on 57 minutes but Eddie Gormley pulled one back for Bray on the hour from the penalty spot, and fifteen minutes from time Byrne struck again to earn a vital point for Pat Devlin's team.
Drogheda delight
In the night's other match, Drogheda United FC beat basement side University College Dublin FC 1-0 at O2 Park. Defender Danny O'Connor scored the only goal on 48 minutes, forcing home a Brian Kelly corner kick. UCD dominated the majority of the second half, and were unlucky not to take a point.
