Shelbourne in the groove

Shelbourne FC easily beat non-league Rockmount 8-0 in the second round of the FAI Cup.

FAI National League champions Shelbourne FC bounced back from their midweek UEFA Champions League qualifier defeat by Hibernians FC, to easily defeat non-league Rockmount 8-0 in the second round of the FAI Cup this weekend.

Red card
Trevor Molloy opened the scoring for Shelbourne with a cheeky lob on 18 minutes, and two goals from Richie Baker along with further strikes from Ollie Cahill, Stuart Byrne, Wesley Houlihan, Stephen Geogeghan and Barry Prenderville gave the Dublin side a comfortable victory. Roy Keane's brother, Pat, was sent off for Rockmount ten minutes from time.

Replay needed
Shelbourne's main rivals, Saint Patrick's Athletic FC, will have to travel to Galway United FC on Tuesday to replay their second round tie after an exciting 2-2 draw on Friday evening. Unfancied Galway went into a shock 2-0 lead, with set-piece goals from Mark Herrick and Declan Sheridan giving them the lead inside 15 minutes. Martin Russell scored immediately for St Patrick's to reduce the deficit, and after incessant pressure, Paul Osam equalised for Pat Dolan's side in the 65th minute to ensure that the teams must meet again in Galway.

Sweet revenge
In the only all FAI National League meeting of the round, Derry City FC avenged an earlier League defeat by Drogheda United FC, to win the tie 3-1 at the first attempt. Veteran striker Liam Coyle and defender Paddy McLaughlin put the visiting Derry side into an early 2-0 lead, and despite a goal from Mark Dempsey for the hosts, a Ciaran Martyn strike five minutes into the second half sealed the victory for Kevin Mahon's Derry side.

O'Flynn hat-trick
All the other FAI National League sides in action progressed to the next round with relative ease. Cork City FC put nine goals without reply past Glenmore Dundrum on Friday evening, with John O'Flynn scoring a hat-trick . Two goals from Robert Doyle, who also missed a penalty, gave University College Dublin FC a 2-1 win over Kildare County. Bray Wanderers AFC defeated non-league Glebe North 2-0, Glenn Crowe scored three in Bohemian FC's 6-0 win over Garda, while Longford Town FC came back from a goal down to defeat CIE Ranch 5-1 this afternoon.

Shock result
The only shock of the round came today when non-league side Fairview Rangers from Limerick City defeated Dublin City FC of the FAI National League 4-1 in Limerick. Fairview are the only non-league side to progress to the final sixteen of the FAI Cup.

Other ties
First Division sides Cobh Ramblers, Sligo Rovers FC and Monaghan United FC also progressed to the third round this weekend, while Athlone Town AFC and Kilkenny City AFC must replay their second round clash after their meeting on Friday finished in a 0-0 draw.
