England round-up: Cool Kewell scuppers United

Kewell on target 
Australian striker Harry Kewell escaped his marker Mikäel Silvestre after 66 minutes to beat goalkeeper Fabien Barthez with a header from Ian Harte's cross to secure the Yorkshire side's first win over United for five years.

Robinson in form 
Leeds's young goalkeeper Paul Robinson took his share of the plaudits after a fine performance which saw him deny goalbound efforts from Ruud van Nistelrooij on two occasions, and Harte did his bit as well as he cleared a David Beckham free-kick off the line.

Giggs denied 
Jonathan Woodgate also saved his team as his acrobatic clearance denied Ryan Giggs's flicked effort from another free-kick, and United's record signing Ferdinand was left with nothing to show for his first game at Elland Road with his new club.

Arsenal's record-breakers 
However, Leeds's success could not keep Arsenal FC off the top of the table. The Gunners established a new record for scoring in 45 consecutive top-flight games in the match at Charlton Athletic FC - breaking the one set by Manchester City FC in 1936/37.

Comfortable victory 
The champions' impressive start continued as they won 3-0 at The Valley. Thierry Henry opened the scoring on 44 minutes before Sylvain Wiltord and the Brazilian Edu embellished a comfortable victory with second-half strikes.

Chelsea unbeaten 
Meanwhile, Chelsea FC moved into third place after beating UEFA Champions League hopefuls Newcastle United FC 3-0 at Stamford Bridge. Eidur Gudjohnsen with two goals and Gianfranco Zola with a trademark free-kick were on target for the unbeaten Londoners.

Heskey clincher 
Liverpool FC let another lead slip against Bolton Wanderers FC yet hit back to claim maximum points at the Reebok stadium thanks to Emile Heskey's decisive strike on 88 minutes. The Merseysiders had lost two-goal advantages in their previous two games, and were twice ahead through Milan Baroš only for Ricardo Gardner and Iván Campo to bring Bolton level.

Everton edge it 
Meanwhile, Liverpool's neighbours Everton FC edged a close game against Middlesbrough FC 2-1 at Goodison Park. Kevin Campbell divided the sides on 77 minutes having earlier equalised Szilard Nemeth's 11th-minute effort for Middlesbrough.

Gregan bags points 
Another tight encouter was the one between West Bromwich Albion FC and Southampton FC, settled by Sean Gregan's 79th-minute goal in a 1-0 Albion success at The Hawthorns.

Sunderland crash
However, there was no home comfort for Sunderland AFC. The Wearsiders fell into the bottom three after going down 3-0 to Fulham FC at the Stadium of Light. Junichi Inamoto, Barry Hayles and Steve Marlet were the scorers.
