FC Schalke 04 climbed to third in the 1. Bundesliga table with a 2-1 home victory over VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach on Sunday.

Poulsen opener
Danish international midfield player Christian Poulsen opened the scoring on 15 minutes for the German Cup holders, who remain four points behind leaders FC Bayern München. Belgian striker Joris van Hout equalised in the 31st minute for the visitors, who dropped to eighth place after falling to their second defeat of the season.

Agali winner
Nigerian striker Victor Agali headed the winner just before the break to cap a fine week for the for the Gelsenkirchen club, following their 4-1 victory over Belarussian outfit FC Gomel in their UEFA cup first round first-leg encounter on Thursday. Second-placed FC Hansa Rostock are also on 12 points from six games but have a better goal difference than Schalke.

Kuranyi treble
A hat-trick from 20-year-old striker Kevin Kuranyi presented VfB Stuttgart with a 3-0 victory over DSC Arminia Bielefeld in the other game played on Sunday. It was the first victory of the season for Stuttgart, who are now tenth in the 18-strong table, two spots above promoted Bielefeld.
