FC Bayern München made up for their midweek disappointment with a 4-1 win against VfL Bochum 1848, while champions BV Borussia Dortmund moved up to second place.
Four headers
With their 2-1 defeat at home against AC Milan in the UEFA Champions League allied with a defeat against Bayer 04 Leverkusen in last weekend's 1. Bundesliga games, Ottmar Hitzfeld's side took out their frustrations on Bochum with two headed goals each from Claudio Pizzaro and Giovane Elber.
Late joy for Elber
Brazilian striker Elber opened the scoring after 27 minutes and his Peruvian striking partner doubled Bayern's advantage at the Olympiastadion with another headed goal after 39 minutes. Pizarro headed a third goal for Bayern after 66 minutes before midfield player Sebastian Schindzielorz pulled a goal back from close range for Bochum after 77 minutes, but Elber popped up again in the dying minutes to restore Bayern's three-goal advantage.
Dortmund triumph
Meanwhile, Matthias Sammer's Dortmund continued the good form that saw them win 3-1 at PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League this week as they secured a 3-0 win at Hanover 96. German international midfield player Torsten Frings opened the scoring with a first-half penalty, and Jan Koller made it 2-0 after 63 minutes. Hannover lost Dame Diouf to a 79th-minute red card before Marcio Amoroso completed the rout with a goal three minutes from time.
Leverkusen lose again
Stefan Effenberg was one of the stars of VfL Wolfsburg 2-0 win against luckless Leverkusen at the VfL-Stadion. Tomislav Maric put the home side in front after just six minutes before the former Bayern hero scored after 74 minutes to complete another miserable 1. Bundesliga afternoon for Leverkusen coach Klaus Toppmöller.
Klose in form
A goal in either half from Miroslav Klose were the key to an emphatic 4-0 win for 1. FC Kaiserslautern at home against FC Energie Cottbus. Klose struck in the 18th and 72nd minutes with an Aleksandr Knavs effort and a Faruk Hujdurovic own goal completing the scoring. It was also a good afternoon for Lawence Aidoo who scored twice for VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach as they won 3-0 at home against DSC Arminia Bielefeld.
Schalke delight
There was also a 3-0 win for FC Schalke 04 as Victor Agali, Ebbe Sand and Gerald Asamoah all found the target in the first half to dispose of Hamburger SV, while an early goal for 1. FC Nürnberg's Sasa Ciric ws not enough for his side as two second-half Marcelinho goals gave Hertha BSC Berlin a 2-1 win at home.
