'A big blow'
The Premiership club confirmed today that the 29-year-old had ruptured a cruciate ligament in the 1-1 draw at the Reebok stadium. Manager Howard Wilkinson said: "It's always a big blow to lose good players. Claudio's credentials are there for all to see but for the immediate and mid-term future he will not be available, and that's a blow."
Growing injury list
Reyna, who was visited by a US national team doctor yesterday, will undergo surgery in Los Angeles later this month. He joins goalkeepers Thomas Sorensen and Thomas Myhre and fellow midfield players Jason McAteer and Julio Arca on the injury list at the Stadium of Light. Sunderland lie second bottom of the Premiership with nine points from eleven games.
