Article body
Third division Alicante CF came from 3-1 down in extra time to beat Spanish champions Valencia CF on penalties and provide the shock of the night in the second round of the Spanish Cup on Wednesday.
Comeback by hosts
After the first 90 minutes finished 1-1, Rafael Benítez's side moved into a commanding lead with goals from Juan Sánchez and Mista. Alicante scored twice in two minutes through Juli and Toni García, though, and the home side clinched the win 5-4 on penalties after Valencia's Brazilian full-back Fábio Aurélio missed with his effort.
Portillo double
Elsewhere, Real Madrid CF crushed Real Oviedo with two goals apiece for Javier Portillo and Jorge Tote. Despite resting ten first-team regulars, there was never any doubt that Madrid would progress once Portillo had opened the scoring in the 33rd minute.
Seville rivals through
Real Betis Balompié had an entirely different evening against Palamós CF. After battling back from going two behind in the first 32 minutes, they took the game to extra time with a 3-3 scoreline at the end of 90 minutes. They finally made their superiority count with three goals in the additional period, including a second goal for Joaquín. Betis's rivals Sevilla FC had a slightly more comfortable night, picking up a 2-1 win at CD Linares.
Colsa wins it
Real Valladolid needed a late equaliser in normal time before winning their match 2-1 in extra time against Getafe CF. The hero for the visitors was Gonzalo Colsa, who scored the decisive goal in the 101st minute. However, there was a shock for Athletic Club Bilbao, as they were beaten 2-1 by Real Unión de Irún. A late goal saw off the top-flight team to send fans of the third division club home in ecstatic mood.
Eibar shattered
Another game to go the distance was the match between SD Eibar and Club Atlético Osasuna, however, 120 minutes of football failed to produce a goal. In the penalty shoot-out, Osasuna broke Eibar hearts with a 7-6 victory. There were no problems for Club Atlético de Madrid: they won 2-0 at CD Leonesa with two second-half goals.
Navarro hits two
Málaga CF slipped up, though, against lesser-ranked opponents by succumbing 2-0 at CD Xerez, while Deportivo Alavés had two Rubén Navarro goals to thank for a 2-1 victory at Real Zaragoza. Finally, Real Murcia won 1-0 at Deportivo Badajoz, the same scoreline that gave RC Recreativo de Huelva success at UD Almería.
