Malta round-up: Valletta back on top

Members

Valletta FC moved back to the top of the league as the weekend programme was hit by the weather.

Valletta FC moved back to the top of the Maltese Premier League with a 2-1 win over bottom side Marsa FC in the only game of the weekend.

Fixtures cancelled
The other four Premier League fixtures, which were scheduled to take place at the National stadium and the Victor Tedesco stadium, were cancelled for the second week running due to torrential rain. Valletta are now momentarily two points clear at the top, but their closest rivals Sliema Wanderers FC have a game in hand.

Six suspended
With six important players suspended by the Malta Football Association (MFA) after last Saturday's match against Floriana FC, Valletta were still in the right frame of mind to take three important points against Marsa. After an early scare, Valletta took control, and took the lead eight minutes before half-time as Beppe Pace headed past Jimmy Micallef following a corner.

Well-worked second
Malta international Gilbert Agius decided the result 15 minutes into the second half as he collected a pass from Antoine Sacco inside the area and beat Micallef from close range to put Valletta 2-0 ahead.

Late consolation
Marsa scored a consolation goal in stoppage time as Malcolm Tirchett beat Ernest Barry from the edge of the area, but it was not enough and Marsa now find themelves rooted to the bottom of the table with only five points from their 12 games.
