Surgery lays Sels low

K. Lierse SK midfield player Werry Sels will be out for at least four months following ankle surgery.

K. Lierse SK's promising start to the Belgian season could be undermined by the absence of Werry Sels after the midfield player had surgery on an ankle injury which will rule him out for four months.

Heavy blow
The 28-year-old received a heavy blow to his right ankle in a tackle with KRC Genk player Igor Tomasic in Sunday's 1-1 home draw. The severity of the damage was such that Sels was forced to have an operation, a situation which he admits has left him "distressed".

Proved his worth
"I never thought this would happen to me," said Sels. "During recent weeks I have proved that I deserve to play first division football in a brilliant team - now I face six weeks without putting my foot on the ground. It will be a long process and then I can work on my comeback. I will do what I have to do in order to play again this season but it will be difficult."

Four missing
Lierse have lost just two of their opening 14 league matches and are currently fourth in the Belgian top flight, six points behind leaders Club Brugge KV. However, the Lisp stadium club will be without the injured Marc Schaessens and Cheikh Gadiaga in addition to suspended duo Axel Smeets and Dan Mitu for Sunday's home match against K. Sint Truidense VV.
