Third division Shrewsbury Town FC are the talk of England after a 2-1 win against Everton FC in today's FA Cup third round games. Manchester United FC and Arsenal FC safely negotiated their way into the fourth round of the FA Cup but Everton were undone by an experienced striker.
Giantkilling feat
Third division Shrewsbury, managed by former Everton player Kevin Ratcliffe, produced the biggest giantkilling feat of the third round as David Moyes's side became the only Premiership club to bow out of the competition to lower league opposition.
Veteran striker
Veteran striker Nigel Jemson had given the home side the lead after 38 minutes at Gay Meadow as the home side took the game to their opponents and goalkeeper Richard Wright had to be at his best to deny Shrewsbury further goals before Niclas Alexandersson equalised for Everton after 59 minutes.
Late winner
However, with just two minutes of the game remaining and with the visitors beginning to look more comfortable, Jemson got on to the end of an Ian Woan free-kick at the far post to give his side a stunning victory.
United ease through
In the afternoon's early game, two penalties from Ruud van Nistelrooij and further goals from David Beckham and Paul Scholes helped United to a comfortable 4-1 home win against Portsmouth FC. Arsenal, meanwhile, broke down stern resistance from Oxford United FC at Highbury through an early strike from Dennis Bergkamp and an own goal from the visitors' Scott McNiven.
All-Premiership ties
In the afternoon's all-Premiership ties, title-chasing Chelsea FC held on for a 1-0 win against Middlesbrough FC thanks to a Mario Stanic goal. However, the game was marred by controversy after Chelsea goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini was dismissed for a foul on Dean Windass.
Misery for Villa
Aston Villa FC had a miserable afternoon at home as they lost 4-1 to Blackburn Rovers FC, while Sunderland AFC came from behind to draw 1-1 at Bolton Wanderers FC as Kevin Phillips's goal cancelled out an 18th-minute effort from Bolton's Michael Ricketts.
Charlton victory
Leeds United AFC, meanwhile, earned a 2-0 win at Scunthorpe United FC, and Charlton Athletic FC had a similarly comfortable win against third division opposition as they won 3-1 against Exeter City FC - the south coast club who have pop star Michael Jackson as one of their board members.
West Ham win
West Ham United FC celebrated their first home win of the season after twice coming from behind to win 3-2 against Nottingham Forest FC, while a Danny Dichio hat-trick helped West Bromwich Albion FC to a 3-1 win against another first division side, Bradford City FC.
Late game
In today's late FA Cup game, Tottenham Hotspur FC were ripped apart at Southampton FC, succumbing to a 4-0 defeat. Michael Svensson, Jo Tessem, Anders Svensson and James Beattie all scored a goal each as Glenn Hoddle's side were comprehensively outplayed by his old club.
