The Italian internationals were chosen ahead of Argentinian Gabriel Batistuta and rewarded coach Fabio Capello with a goal apiece. Montella headed the Giallorossi ahead on 30 minutes, converting a Davide Bombardini cross after good work by Bombardini and Vincent Candela.
Late scares
The second goal came on 69 minutes when Delvecchio tapped the ball in after Montella had missed a header from a corner. Vicenza got back into the game two minutes later when Andrea Zanchetta's free-kick beat Francesco Antonioli and they then threatened an equaliser as Zanchetta and Julio González both went close to scoring.
Faisca sees red
However, the home side's fate was sealed when Vasco Faisca was sent off for a second bookable offence in the closing minutes. The return match in Rome will be played next Wednesday.
