Gabriel Batistuta has set his sights on winning the Scudetto after he was unveiled as an Internazionale FC player at a press conference in Milan today.
'I want to win the Scudetto'
Batistuta has signed a six-month contract with Inter after leaving AS Roma and is hoping to have the same effect on the Nerazzurri as he had in Rome when he helped inspire Fabio Capello's side to the title in 2001. "I want to win the Scudetto," the Argentinian said. "Winning the league is the only thing on my mind."
Still enthusiastic
Now 33 and retired from international football, Batistuta added: "I have been playing for many years now but I'm still as hungry to play as when I was a kid." Batistuta, who joins as a short-term replacement for injured compatriot Hernán Crespo, will not be eligible for the UEFA Champions League, having already played in the competition for Roma.
Never too late
Batistuta, who will wear the No19 shirt, has taken a pay cut to join Inter. He said: "I could have stayed at Roma, but I decided to join Inter for two reasons: in Rome the fans no longer accepted me, plus the opportunity to join Inter was too good to refuse. I would not have accepted any other kind of offer. Inter are a serious club who are competing for the title. I will prove that I didn't join Inter too late to win something."
Facchetti delighted
Inter are second in Serie A, three points behind leaders AC Milan, as they chase a first league title since 1989. Inter's vice-president, Giacinto Facchetti, said: "After Crespo's injury we had to find a player who was able to replace him and we decided on Batistuta. It's clear to everybody how excited our fans are about this signing. Both our president and [coach Héctor) Cúper are also extremely happy."
