Weekend round-up: Bayern haunt Leverkusen again

Members

FC Bayern München moved to within sight of the German title, while the leading contenders stumbled in France.

No mercy
Bayern are 13 points clear in the 1. Bundesliga with only ten games of the season left following a 3-0 win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen. The leaders, who also knocked Leverkusen out of the German Cup in midweek, showed no mercy, as Giovane Elber set up Claudio Pizarro for an early goal and then added the other two himself. However, Bayern did suffer a setback with the loss of Michael Ballack for two months with an ankle injury.

Dortmund setback
BV Borussia Dortmund, who last season pipped Leverkusen to the title, fell further behind Bayern as they lost 1-0 to lowly VfL Borussia Möenchengladbach. Mikael Forssell, on loan from Chelsea FC, scored the only goal to move his side out of the bottom three and ahead of 15th-placed Leverkusen. VfB Stuttgart could have overtaken Dortmund, but had to be content with drawing level on points as they were held 1-1 by Hamburger SV.

Monaco run ends
France's Ligue 1 has never looked like developing into a one-horse race, and just one point now separates the top three after both the leading pair stumbled at the weekend. First-placed AS Monaco FC's 13-game unbeaten run ended in a 1-0 defeat by FC Girondins de Bordeaux, who moved to within three points of their opponents thanks to Jean-Claude Darcheville's 71st-minute goal.

Lyon closer
Olympique de Marseille could not take advantage as they lost 3-0 at home to Paris Saint-Germain FC, Jerome Leroy scoring twice, either side of a Ronaldinho effort. Champions Olympique Lyonnais are a point behind the top two after a 3-1 home win against AC Ajaccio. Juninho Pernambucano claimed the first two goals before fellow Brazilian Sonny Anderson struck a late third on his return from injury.

Madrid ahead
Real Madrid CF held on to their lead in the Primera División as they beat Real Racing Club Santander 4-1, Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane, and substitutes Javier Portillo and Guti scoring. Real Sociedad remain a point behind after a comfortable 3-1 win against struggling Deportivo Alavés. RC Deportivo La Coruña are up to third, three points off the lead, after overcoming Villarreal CF 2-1 while Valencia CF lost 1-0 at home to Club Atlético de Madrid.

Top two move clear
Juventus FC remain three points clear in Italy's Serie A, but needed a late David Trezeguet goal to gain a 1-0 win at ten-man Udinese Calcio. Internazionale FC, beaten by Juventus last week, returned to form by defeating Bologna FC 2-1, but AC Milan lost ground as they were held 0-0 at home by AC Chievo Verona. S.S. Lazio's title hopes faded even further as they drew 1-1 in the capital derby against AS Roma.

Arsenal face replay
FA Cup holders Arsenal FC will face a quarter-final replay against fellow Londoners Chelsea FC after a 2-2 draw at Highbury, Frank Lampard's late equaliser giving the visitors a lifeline in the competition. The confirmed semi-finalists are 1976 winners Southampton FC and the first division pair of Sheffield United FC - who beat Leeds United AFC - and Watford FC.

Mixed fortunes
FC Porto and Sporting Club de Portugal had mixed fortunes in the Portuguese Cup quarter-finals. While runaway league leaders Porto cruised to a 7-0 victory against Varzim SC with goalkeeper Nuno Simões scoring a late penalty, holders Sporting suffered a shock 1-0 defeat at home by second division Associação Naval 1º de Maio.
