BV Borussia Dortmund claimed second place with a 2-0 win against ten-man Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

Reigning German 1. Bundesliga champions BV Borussia Dortmund claimed second place with a 2-0 win against ten-man Bayer 04 Leverkusen to leave last season's runners-up deeper in relegation trouble.

Ewerthon scores early
The two sides duelled for the title until the last day of the 2001/02 season, but Dortmund were set for victory today by the sixth minute, when Yildiray Bastürk was sent off for a bad foul with the home team already ahead through Ewerthon. Jan Koller clinched the victory on 28 minutes to move his team to within seven points of leaders FC Bayern München. Leverkusen are 14th in the 18-team league, just a point ahead of the relegation zone.

Hamburg up to sixth
SV Werder Bremen could have reduced Bayern's lead to six points with victory against Hamburger SV but instead slipped to third with a 1-0 defeat. Sergej Barbarez's 56th-minute goal was enough to move Hamburg up to sixth, only five points behind Bremen.
