Article body
Reigning Russian champions FC Lokomotiv Moskva claimed the first trophy of the 2003 season by beating PFC CSKA Moskva on penalties to become the first winners of the new Russian Super Cup.
Record signing
Lokomotiv, who beat CSKA to the 2002 title in a play-off last November, came into the match having already played two UEFA Champions League matches this month, losing 1-0 twice to AC Milan. Russian Cup holders CSKA, opening their season's campaign, fielded the most expensive player in Russian history, Czech international midfield player Jirí Jarosík, bought from AC Sparta Praha in January for €3.7m.
Substitute equalises
Debutant Jarosík did not take long to begin to justify his fee as he gave CSKA the lead with a 39th-minute header, fully deserved by after his side dominated the first half. However, Lokomotiv soaked up the pressure aside from the goal, and with seven minutes left levelled the scores when Vadim Evseev 's shot was parried by CSKA goalkeeper Veniamin Mandrykin, and substitute Ruslan Pimenov converted the rebound.
Goalkeeper the hero
Both teams produced positive play in extra time, but the closest either side went was a shot from CSKA forward Alexander Geinrikh, which went wide from five metres out. The shoot-out then belonged to Lokomotiv goalkeeper Sergey Ovchinnikov, who lived up to his nickname 'The Boss' as he blocked four penalties, his side winning 4-3 after seven shots each.
'Victory is priceless'
After the game, Lokomotiv coach Yuri Semin said: "The emotion from this victory is priceless for us ahead of our game with [BV] Borussia Dortmund in the [UEFA] Champions League." Lokomotiv must win in Germany on Wednesday to stay in the competition.
'I felt confidence'
Jarosík took consolation from his goal in defeat. "I was worried about my official debut in a new team", he said. "But with my first touch I felt confidence."
