Maric woe for Wolfsburg
Friday, April 4, 2003
Article summary
VfL Wolfsburg's UEFA Cup hopes have been hit by an injury to key striker Tomislav Maric.
Article body
Surgery needed
The Croatian international forward has been a revelation this season, scoring nine goals in 22 appearances. Four of these strikes had come in his last five matches. However, the 30-year-old suffered a fractured cheekbone while playing in Croatia's 2-0 victory against Andorra last Wednesday, and had an operation today.
Key games
Maric, who was substituted at half-time in the UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifier, could be out for at least three weeks. He will definitely miss Sunday's Bundesliga fixture at FC Hansa Rostock followed by the home game with Hannover 96 on 13 April. Both opponents are placed lower in the table and victories could help Wolfsburg move up from their current position. They lie eighth in the table on 35 points.
