Shocks for Stuttgart and Leverkusen

Members

Bundesliga high-fliers VfB Stuttgart and Bayer 04 Leverkusen both suffered surprise German Cup defeats.

Sverkos hat-trick
Stuttgart had only conceded three league goals this term, and seemed to be on their way to victory when Kevin Kuranyi put them ahead just before the break. However, 20-year-old Czech striker Vaclav Sverkos levelled just after half-time, and then struck again to put his team in front. Imre Szabics equalised on the hour, but ten minutes later Sverkos completed his hat-trick, and Arie van Lent then confirmed the win.

Magath disappointment
After the game, Stuttgart coach Felix Magath said: "It is sad that we lost, particularly because we really could have won this game. The good thing is we will now be able to concentrate on the Bundesliga and the [UEFA] Champions League."

Leverkusen upset
However, there was no consolation for 1992/93 cup winners Leverkusen, who travelled to south-west Germany and came back defeated by their regional third division opponents. Stefan Sieger's penalty and Heiko Throm's goal made it 2-0 to Hoffenheim on the half-hour. Lucio and Dimitar Berbatov pulled the Bundesliga's third-placed side level in the second period, but Kai Herdling struck a dramatic winner 13 minutes from time to take the amatuers into the quarter-finals, where they are joined by second division sides MSV Duisburg and TSV Alemannia Aachen.
