United soar as Chelsea stumble

Members

Manchester United FC retained top spot with a defeat of Everton FC while Chelsea FC lost at Charlton Athletic FC.

Hreidarsson opener
Charlton scored inside 45 seconds through a Hermann Hreidarsson header and although John Terry equalised, the home side regained the lead before the break through Matt Holland. Jonatan Johansson and Jason Eueull both struck in the opening eight minutes of the second half to seal Charlton's success, and render meaningless Eidur Gudjohnsen's 72nd-minute effort.

United rest stars
The result leaves Charlton in fifth place and Chelsea third. Claudio Ranieri's side are four points behind leaders United who rested Ruud van Nistelrooij and Ryan Giggs and still beat Everton through goals from Nicky Butt, Kleberson and David Bellion.

Neville own goal
United struggled for a short while after Gary Neville's eleventh-minute own goal had cancelled out Butt's early strike but they never looked like losing the lead a second time once Kleberson had scored just before the break. After Bellion had made it 3-1, Duncan Ferguson headed a late second for the visitors.

Henry double
United have 43 points with Arsenal FC a point behind in second place after beating Wolverhampton Wanderers FC 3-0 at Highbury. The north London team went ahead after 13 minutes through a Jody Craddock own goal before Thierry Henry struck twice - on 20 and 89 minutes - to secure the three points.

Fulham up to fourth
Fulham FC climbed back to fourth place after two Louis Saha goals brought a 2-0 home victory over Southampton FC, while Darren Ambrose's 90th-minute strike earned sixth-placed Newcastle United FC a 1-1 draw at Leicester City FC, cancelling out Paul Dickov's goal.

Liverpool win
Liverpool FC returned to winning ways as Sami Hyppiä, Florent Sinama Pongolle and Vladimír Šmicer all scored in a 3-1 defeat of Bolton Wanderers FC, while late goals from Jeff Kenna and Mikael Forssell earned Birmingham City FC a 2-1 win over Manchester City FC.

Babbel saves Blackburn
Markus Babbel's 90th-minute equaliser for Blackburn Rovers FC meant it finished 2-2 against Middlesbrough FC at Ewood Park, while there were no goals in the Elland Road meeting of Leeds United AFC and Aston Villa FC.

Berger goals
Finally Portsmouth FC ended a run of one point from five matches when Patrik Berger struck twice in a 2-0 defeat of Tottenham Hotspur FC at Fratton Park - the south coast club's first league victory over Tottenham since 1957.
