Derby meeting
With the match level a minute into added time, City left-back Michael Tarnat swung in a cross, and substitute Jon Macken escaped his marker to head his side into the fifth round – and a derby meeting with Manchester United FC at Old Trafford.
Early advantage
The home team had taken the lead in the second minute at White Hart Lane, as the ball fell kindly for Ledley King to cut inside and curl a shot high into the net with his left foot from just inside the penalty area.
Composed finish
Tottenham doubled their advantage after 19 minutes. Stephen Carr picked out Robbie Keane with a long ball, and the Republic of Ireland striker prodded the ball beyond goalkeeper Árni Gautar Arason. Seconds later, Kevin Keegan's side lost Nicolas Anelka to injury, with Macken coming on in his place.
Curling free-kick
It was 3-0 moments before half-time as Joey Barton fouled Michael Brown on the edge of the penalty area and Christian Ziege bent the free-kick into the net. The visitors' hopes of recovery reduced further when Barton, who had been cautioned in the earlier incident, received a second yellow card for dissent seconds after the half-time whistle.
Deficit reduced
Nevertheless, three minutes after the restart, Tarnat's clever free-kick enabled captain Sylvain Distin to head City back into the match, and when Paul Bosvelt's mis-hit shot was deflected in by Anthony Gardner, Tottenham looked vulnerable.
Incredible drama
Incredibly, City drew level ten minutes from time, as Shaun Wright-Phillips raced clear to lift the ball over Kasey Keller. Tottenham tried to put the visitors under pressure in the closing stages but Macken's stunning late intervention capped an astounding fightback.
Fulham through
There was also late drama in tonight's other replay, as Everton FC's Francis Jeffers – who had scored a last-minute equaliser in the first game with Fulham FC – repeated the trick to cancel out Junichi Inamoto's strike. However, Steed Malbranque's 102nd-minute winner finally sent Fulham through to meet West Ham United FC.
Second postponement
The only other outstanding fourth-round tie, between non-league Telford United FC and Millwall FC, was postponed for a second time due to a waterlogged pitch.
