Henry's hundred cheers Arsenal

Thierry Henry scored his 100th goal as Arsenal FC opened up a five-point gap.

Thierry Henry scored twice - including his 100th goal for the club - as Arsenal FC extended their advantage at the top of the Premiership to five points with a 2-0 win against Southampton FC tonight.

Unbeaten run
The victory extended Arsenal's unbeaten start to the English league season to 25 games, although second-placed Manchester United FC can close the gap to two points with a win against Middlesbrough FC on Wednesday, when third-placed Chelsea FC visit Portsmouth FC.

Pires denied
Arsène Wenger's side were quickly into their stride at Highbury, with Robert Pires forcing Southampton goalkeeper Antti Niemi into early action, although Southampton swiftly rallied and forced three corners in quick succession.

Henry strikes
Arsenal took the lead a minute past the half-hour as Henry scored his 100th goal for the club with a composed finish. However, the goal seemed to galvanise the visitors, and Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann produced a solid stop to keep out Brett Ormerod's effort on the stroke of half-time.

Decisive second
Southampton continued to make life difficult for the leaders and pressed for an equaliser in the second 45 minutes, but Henry's second – a powerful finish into the roof of the net from inside the penalty area – make the game safe in added time.

Leeds lifted
At the other end of the table, Leeds United AFC boosted their survival hopes with a crucial 4-1 win against fellow strugglers Wolverhampton Wanderers FC at Elland Road, moving off the bottom and above their opponents in the process. The home side took the lead in the 14th minute as Jermaine Pennant's cross was flicked on by Stephen Caldwell and striker Alan Smith bundled in from close range.

Deflected strike
The lead lasted only seven minutes as Ioan Ganea scored his second goal in as many games to bring Wolves level, but Leeds were back in front before half-time thanks to Dominic Matteo's deflected shot.

Second-half goals
James Milner gave the home side a two-goal cushion two minutes past the hour as he turned in Smith's cross, and striker Mark Viduka thumped in a fourth in the final minute.

Leicester held
Another struggling side, Leicester City FC, took the lead at home to Bolton Wanderers FC through Les Ferdinand's 16th-minute strike, but were forced to settle for a point as goalkeeper Ian Walker allowed Kevin Davies's shot to squirm over the line for a bizarre own goal.
