Juve humbled at Atalanta

Atalanta BC gained a 2-0 victory against Juventus FC in the first leg of their Italian Cup second round tie.

By Paolo Corradini

Second-half goals from Andrea Lazzari gave Atalanta BC a surprise 2-0 victory against Juventus FC in the first leg of their Italian Cup second round tie.

Understrength team
Juventus coach Fabio Capello picked an understrength team at an Atalanta side who are still looking for their first Serie A win this season. But the home team took the lead 13 minutes into the second period when Lazzarri left visiting goalkeeper Antonio Chimenti helpless with an angled effort and the 20-year-old striker added a second on 76 minutes with a long distance shot.

Nedved injury
Juventus substitute Liliam Thuram hit the bar for the 2003/04 finalists with a long-range shot six minutes later but both Nicola Legrottaglie and Pavel Nedved left the pitch with back and leg injuries respectively. The Czech striker is doubtful for next Tuesday's UEFA Champions League game with AFC Ajax.

Roma misery
Meanwhile, AS Roma were defeated 2-1 by AC Siena at the Olimpico Stadium. Tore André Flo's header put the visitors ahead eight minutes from half-time, but Roma captain Francesco Totti came on at the interval and equalised with a wonderful angled effort on 53 minutes. However, Flo headed what proved to be the decisive goal two minutes from the end despite Totti hitting a post in injury time.

Sampdoria win
Earlier in the afternoon, Valeri Kutuzov and Cristiano Doni scored as UC Sampdoria claimed an important 2-0 away win against Serie B team Torino Calcio. The remaining five first-leg ties are played out on Saturday and Sunday, while the returns take place in the second week of January.
