AZ Alkmaar moved to within two points of the Eredivisie lead with a shock 4-1 win against second-placed Feyenoord, while PSV Eindhoven were held by FC Utrecht.
Crucial second
The sides went into the interval at the Alkmaarderhout level at 1-1 after Joris Mathijsen's opener was cancelled out by Jan Kromkamp's own goal. But Feyenoord soon began to dominate and had several opportunities to go ahead but, after striker Dirk Kuijt had a penalty appeal turned down just after the hour, Alkmaar immediately countered and themselves took the lead through Kenneth Perez.
Sendings off
The Dane made it 3-1 on 75 minutes before Pascal Bosschaart and Chong-Gug Song were both dismissed for the visitors. Former Feyenoord striker Robin Nelisse then capped off a terrific result with the home side's fourth goal in the dying minutes. The result took Co Adriaanse's team to within one point of their opponents and two of PSV after the league leaders drew 0-0 with Utrecht.
Heerenveen turnaround
SC Heerenveen move to fourth after a remarkable conclusion to their match at FC Den Bosch. The home side were leading 2-1 as the game neared the final ten minutes when Klaas-Jan Huntelaar headed in an equaliser, his second goal of the game. Yuri Rose and Georgios Samares then added two in the final three minutes to seal a 4-2 victory.
Ajax end winless run
Willem II also scored three late goals against bottom club RBC Roosendaal. There were less than 23 minutes of the game remaining when Iwan Redan broke the deadlock, but ten minutes later it was 3-0 after Anouar Hadouir and Tom Caluwé had also found the net. Conversely, Rafael van der Vaart’s solitary 24th-minute strike was enough for AFC Ajax to claim their first win in three games against NEC Nijmegen.
Vitesse shock Twente
SBV Vitesse, meanwhile, had suffered three successive defeats before Purrel Fränkel, Nicky Hofs, Richard Knopper and Theo Janssen helped them to a surprise 4-1 win at FC Twente. Roda JC drew 1-1 with RKC Waalwijk, while FC Groningen gained an invaluable 4-3 win at home against fellow strugglers ADO Den Haag. Two goals in the last minute could not rescue a point for the visitors who had goalkeeper Dorus de Vries sent off and coach Frans Adelaar dismissed from the dugout.
