Messina make most of second chance

FC Messina Peloro earned three significant points in their battle against relegation from Serie A with a crucial 1-0 win against fellow strugglers Atalanta BC in tonight's rearranged match.

Match abandoned
The game had been abandoned after 30 minutes last December, with Messina leading 1-0, following severe rains which made the field unplayable. In the replayed game, the home side had more of the early pressure but it was Atalanta who had the best chance of the first 45 minutes, Andrea Lazzari missing the target with only goalkeeper Marco Storari to beat.

Sullo strikes
The decisive goal arrived nine minutes into the second half as Salvatore Sullo's powerful strike from the edge of the penalty area proved enough to move the home team into ninth place with 24 points. Atalanta, meanwhile, remained bottom with eleven points.
