Benfica legend
Bento began his career at FC Barreirense before joining Benfica in 1972 as understudy to another legendary Portuguese keeper, José Henrique. Famous for his acrobatic saves, the agile custodian collected 63 caps for Portugal and shone in the 1984 UEFA European Championship semi-final against France, despite his side losing 3-2. He also featured at the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, but only appeared in Portugal's 1-0 win against England before fracturing his leg in training.
Glittering career
At Benfica, Bento won eight championships, six Portuguese Cups, two Portuguese Super Cups and the 1977 Portuguese Footballer of the Year award before ending his playing days in 1992 at the age of 44. Bento was working as a goalkeeping coach at Benfica and will be sadly missed.
