Article body
Substitute John O'Shea scored an added-time winner as ten-man Manchester United FC claimed a 1-0 victory against Liverpool FC at Anfield as Arsenal FC returned to winning ways against Reading FC and Chelsea FC beat Portsmouth FC.
Scholes dismissed
All looked lost for Manchester United when Paul Scholes was dismissed five minutes from time after reacting to a challenge until O'Shea intervened. Pepe Reina failed to deal with Cristiano Ronaldo's low free-kick and the Irish international was on hand to poke in the loose ball. It earned United a fifth successive Premiership win, leaving the home side without a win in this fixture since November 2001, though it was they that edged much of the match.
Giggs milestone
Peter Crouch thought he had won it for Liverpool in the dying minutes only for Edwin van der Sar to save. Ryan Giggs was making his 700th United appearance but it was Ronaldo that always looked likely to produce the decisive moment. The result allowed Arsenal to move within a point of Liverpool, with two games in hand, after a Gilberto penalty and Julio Baptista's first Premiership goal helped them to a 2-1 victory at home to Reading, as Cesc Fabregas put into his own net. In the evening game, Didier Drogba (32) and Salomon Kalou (81) were on target as Chelsea beat Portsmouth to remain nine points behind United.
Wigan relief
There was one goal in it at Manchester City FC, as Wigan Athletic FC eased relegation fears with a 1-0 win courtesy of Caleb Folan (17). It lifts them eight points clear of Charlton Athletic FC, who recovered from going two goals down to earn a point against fellow strugglers Watford FC, Darren Ambrose making it 2-2 with two minutes left. The north-east derby between Newcastle United FC and Middlesbrough FC ended goalless while there were 1-1 draws in the games between Sheffield United FC and Everton FC and Fulham FC and Aston Villa FC.
