Bayern's 100 reasons to yearn for home

In a season of numerous highs so far, 13 April 2013 will hold a special place in FC Bayern München's successful recent history.

The 4-0 triumph over 1. FC Nürnberg witnessed several noteworthy events, including Franck Ribéry leading the team onto the pitch as captain for the first time, and the Bundesliga debut of Pierre Højbjerg, making him the youngest-ever Bayern player at 17 years and 251 days. The most impressive, however, was that Bayern recorded their 100th Bundesliga win at the Fußball Arena München, a century reached in just 134 games.

After leaving their old Olympiastadion home, the Munich faithful first tasted victory in their new home on 5 August 2005 as Bayern prevailed 3-0 against VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach. Owen Hargreaves' goal and a Roy Makaay double paved the way for a win which featured a substitute cameo from Claudio Pizarro, a 90-minute contributor versus Nürnberg and the only player still in the squad from 2005 after his return to Bayern last summer.

The €350m financial burden imposed by the Arena has not and will not prove problematic for the Bavarians, as president Uli Hoeness explained last year: "I think we will have paid off the Arena by 2020, which will make us the richest club in the world. We have a stadium that is worth almost €500m, a squad full of expensive players and a bulging account."

As has been the case all season – with Bayern failing to win just three of their 15 Bundesliga home matches – it is always a daunting trip for domestic rivals. It needed six games after the stadium's opening for the hosts to concede, Miroslav Klose slotting past Oliver Kahn after 60 seconds to give SV Werder Bremen an early lead, only for Bayern to battle back and notch a 3-1 success. It also took until the 24th home match for the Bavarians to suffer defeat, Hamburger SV being the first guests to collect three points.

Away victories have remained rare. Bayern have lost just nine times in the Arena, with Bremen recording the highest win, a 5-2 victory early in the 2008/09 campaign, with Pizarro among the visiting scorers that day.

Though occasionally criticised, the atmosphere inside the ground is rarely quiet, with Bayern's dominant displays in the Bundesliga, as well as in the UEFA Champions League, always helping to raise the volume. Those levels were at their greatest during the 99th success on 30 March, when Jupp Heynckes' men thumped Hamburg 9-2 to record the biggest win the stadium has seen. That man Pizarro – there when it all began – added another chapter to the Arena's rapidly expanding history with four of the goals.
