Fiorentina come unstuck, Milan foiled

ACF Fiorentina's six-match unbeaten run in Serie A was brought to an abrupt end on Saturday as the fourth-placed side were handed a surprising 1-0 defeat at Cagliari Calcio.

The hosts had been without a win in six outings, but they improved their fortunes via a first-half penalty, awarded when Marco Sau was brought down by Facundo Roncaglia after springing the offside trap. Mauricio Pinilla did the rest from the spot.

Both goalkeepers were tested in an end-to-end second half, but the scoreline could have been worse for Fiorentina had Albin Ekdal's late effort not clipped the frame of the goal. The result now means that SSC Napoli can open up a six-point gap in third spot when they visit Atalanta BC on Sunday.

Clarence Seedorf was aiming to become the first AC Milan coach to win his opening three Serie A matches in over 50 years, but his charges were foiled in a 1-1 draw at Torino FC. Defender Adil Rami's maiden Serie A goal – a deflected effort from the edge of the area –salvaged a point for the Rossoneri after Ciro Immobile's superb solo effort had opened the scoring for sixth-placed Torino.

Udinese Calcio, meanwhile, eased their relegation fears by winning 2-0 at fellow strugglers Bologna FC.
