Voting starts for UEFA.com fans' Women’s and Men’s Teams of the Year

Football supporters around the world are once again being invited to have their say as the polls open for the 2020 UEFA.com fans' Team of the Year. Besides the traditional men’s poll, for the first time fans are also given the chance to select their women’s Team of the Year.

Fans have until 6 January to select their favourite XI from two shortlists of 50 of elite players – five goalkeepers, 15 defenders, 15 midfielders and 15 forwards – playing for clubs in one of UEFA's 55 member associations leagues in 2020:

Nominees and Winning Team

The 50 nominees for the women’s and men’s edition have been selected by the UEFA editorial team based on the players' performances in UEFA competitions and domestic competitions within UEFA member associations from January to December 2020.

The winning XI of the UEFA.com Team of the Year will be chosen to reflect the votes of the fans in parallel with players’ achievements over the course of the calendar year, moderated by the UEFA Technical Observer panel, who have also validated both the women’s and men’s list of nominees.

Key numbers

Women's shortlist:

• UEFA Women's Champions League winners Olympique Lyonnais have the most players represented with 13 of their finals squad (including the since-departed Lucy Bronze) nominated.

• Aided by Lyon's dominance, France have the most national-team players nominated (10) and the most represented league (19).

• Five of FIFA's six confederations have at least one player nominated.

• The 50 nominated players have an average age of 27, the same as the male shortlist.

• Lena Oberdorf (VfL Wolfsburg) who turns 19 in December, is the only teenage nominee. Hedvig Lidahl (VfL Wolfsburg/Atlético de Madrid), at 37, is the oldest, with Steph Houghton (Manchester City) at 32 the most senior outfield player on the list.

Men's shortlist:

• Club with most nominees: Ten players who represented UEFA Champions League winners FC Bayern München at some point in 2020 received nominations, including UEFA Men's Player of the Year Robert Lewandowski.

• Total number of clubs: The nominees represented 21 clubs in total – including cases where players turned out for two clubs in 2020.

• Total number of nationalities: The 50 nominees represent 19 nationalities, with Germany (six nominees) edging out France (five nominees) as the most successful nation.

• Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus) is nominated for a 17th straight year

• Bayern left-back Alphonso Davies (who turned 20 in November) is the youngest nominee; having turned 36 in September, Brazilian centre-back Thiago Silva (transferred from Paris Saint-Germain to Chelsea FC in the summer) is the oldest nominee on the list.

• The Premier League and Bundesliga are the most represented leagues; the list features 15 players who played in England's top flight at some point in 2020, plus 15 who did similarly in Germany.

The UEFA.com fans' Team of the Year has proved hugely popular with fans since its launch in 2001, with millions of votes cast every year. Some players have become regular members of the Team of the Year, led by Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus – 14 appearances), Lionel Messi (FC Barcelona – 11) and Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid CF – 8).
