A UEFA.tv documentary about Northern Irish footballer Jimmy Hasty won Outstanding Short Documentary at the 45th annual Sports Emmy Awards in New York on Tuesday night, while Apple TV+'s series on the Super League received two prizes.

One-Armed Wonder: The Extraordinary Story of Jimmy Hasty tells the unbelievable story of how Hasty, after losing his left arm on his first day of work at the age of 14, went on to become a first-team star for Dundalk as they won their first Irish league title in 30 years in 1962/63.

The team then turned heads on their European Cup debut the following season, becoming the first Irish side to win an away game in Europe, with Hasty playing a key role. Sadly, Hasty – who scored more than 100 goals for the Lilywhites during his career – was murdered during The Troubles a decade later, being gunned down at point blank range by a paramilitary group in Belfast. He was just 38 years old.

Accepting the award, director Richard Milway said: “I’d like to thank the Hasty family – Jimmy’s sons, Paul and Martin, and his wife Margaret. It’s 50 years since Jimmy was killed, and this was the first time that Margaret had spoken about Jimmy’s death. She did so with amazing grace and courage, and I’d like to dedicate this award to her.”

The 27-minute film, produced by Noah Media Group, is available exclusively for streaming on UEFA.tv. It is the second episode of the Extraordinary Stories series, which follows some of our sport’s most remarkable tales, including that of Turbine Potsdam – a women’s factory team set up in former East Germany that went on to win the UEFA Women’s Cup/Champions League in 2005 and 2010.

In addition to UEFA.tv’s big win, Apple TV+ production Super League: The War for Football took home two Sports Emmys for Outstanding Documentary Series and Outstanding Graphic Design.

The series documents the high-stakes battle that is set off when plans for a breakaway league emerge and the past, present and future of European football collide, leaving the game’s most powerful leaders to defend, or upend, the traditions of the sport.

You can watch the four-part series now, exclusively on Apple TV+.
