UEFA Women's EURO 2025 kicks off in Thun with Iceland taking on Finland in Group A, both nations featuring in the tournament for the fifth time.
Iceland reached the finals by finishing second in their qualifying group while Finland secured their berth via the play-offs.
Previous meetings
This is the first time the nations have been paired together at a major tournament although they did meet in qualifying for the 1984 finals, Finland winning 2-0 away and 3-0 at home in August 1983.
The Finns were also victorious in their most recent contest – a 2-1 friendly win in Reykjavík in July 2023.
Form guide
In reaching the finals, Iceland won four of their six games (D1 L1) to finish second in Group A4, behind Germany but ahead of Austria and Poland. They conceded the fewest goals in the group – five – and defeated each of their opponents in their last three games.
The 3-0 win against Germany in their penultimate qualifier made Iceland the first team since 2008 to beat Germany by three goals in a competitive fixture.
Wolfsburg forward Sveindís Jónsdóttir was Iceland's top scorer in qualifying with three goals, one more than Hlín Eiríksdóttir.
Having first featured at the 2009 finals, Iceland are making their fifth straight tournament appearance. They reached the quarter-finals on their second entry in 2013 but have been eliminated in the group stage in their three other participations.
Under current head coach Thorsteinn Halldórsson's Iceland three games at EURO 2022 all finished 1-1, making them the first nation to draw all of their group games in a Women's EURO. They finished third in Group D behind France and Belgium.
In qualifying a team lead by Marko Saloranta finished bottom of Group A1 behind Italy, Netherlands and Norway, winning just one of their six games, but advanced to the play-offs as one of the seeded nations.
Paired with Montenegro in round 1, they won 6-0 on aggregate (1-0 a, 5-0 h) before a 2-0 aggregate victory over Scotland (0-0 a, 2-0 h) earned their place in a fifth Women's EURO tournament.
Nea Lehtola, Ema Koivisto, Jutta Rantala and Linda Sällström all scored two goals apiece during qualifying.
Finland have twice progressed beyond their group; they reached the semi-finals on debut in 2005, where they lost to champions Germany, and as hosts were beaten by runners-up England in the quarter-finals four years later.
The Nordic nation have only missed out in one of the last six Women's EURO tournaments, although they lost all three group games at the most recent edition in 2022.
