World champions Spain open their UEFA Women's EURO 2025 account against Portugal in Group B as the pair meet in Bern.

Spain were group winners in qualifying while Portugal navigated their way through the play-offs to reach a third successive finals.

Previous meetings

They were most recently drawn together in Group A3 of the 2025 UEFA Women's Nations League, reigning champions Spain winning 4-2 in Portugal on 4 April and 7-1 in Vigo four days later, Aitana Bonmatí and Alexia Putellas both scoring twice in the latter fixture.

Those were the teams' first meetings since Vicky Losada (23) and Amanda Sampedro (42) gave Spain a 2-0 victory in the Women's EURO 2017 group stage. That win in Doetinchem was Spain's only triumph in Group D, although they still progressed thanks to a superior head-to-head goal difference over both Portugal and Scotland.

The two nations had also met in qualifying for that tournament, Spain winning both home (2-0) and away (4-1) in finishing first in Group 2 with a 100% record. Portugal were second and reached the finals via the play-offs.

Portugal have not beaten their neighbours since a 1-0 win in a February 1983 friendly in La Guardia, Spain's first match as an official national team.

Form guide

Spain

Spain won five of their six qualifying games in Group A2 (L1), scoring 18 goals and conceding five in finishing ahead of Denmark, Belgium and Czechia.

Jenni Hermoso and Salma Paralluelo both scored three goals in qualifying as Spain averaged three per game.

Making their fifth Women's EURO appearance in 2025, Spain have never failed to qualify for the knockout stages. They have reached the quarter-finals in each of the last three editions, while a semi-final appearance on debut in 1997, where they lost 1-2 to runners-up Italy, remains their best showing.

A 4-1 victory against Finland in the 2022 group stage was Spain's biggest EURO victory.

Spain won their first-ever senior major international women's tournament thanks to Olga Carmona's first-half strike against England in the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup final in Sydney.

Less than a year later, goals from Aitana Bonmatí (32) and Mariona Caldentey (53) gave La Roja victory against France in the 2023/24 UEFA Women's Nations League final in Seville – the inaugural staging of the event.

Current head coach Montse Tomé, who had served as an assistant to Jorge Vila at the 2023 World Cup, guided Spain to that Women's Nations League title and then fourth place at the 2024 Olympic Games.

Portugal

Unbeaten Portugal (W5 D1) topped their qualifying group ahead of Northern Ireland, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Malta to advance to the play-offs, where they recorded an 8-1 aggregate victory against Azerbaijan (4-1 a, 4-0 h) before a 3-2 defeat of Czechia (1-1 h, 2-1 a).

Diana Silva, who scored both in the second leg against Czechia, was Portugal's top scorer in qualifying with six goals.

After featuring in both 2017 and 2022, this is Portugal's third Women's EURO appearance; they are yet to progress beyond the group stage.

A 2-1 win over Scotland in the 2017 group stage is Portugal's only Women's EURO victory; their finals record otherwise is D1 L4.

In charge since February 2014, Francisco Neto guided Portugal to their first-ever World Cup in 2023, where they exited at the group stage with the record W1 D1 L1.
