Football is a consistent thread running through Frank Paauw's life – he continues to play with the veterans team of Graaf Willem II, VAC in The Hague – and was the central element of his long career with the police.
During UEFA EURO 2000 he was the stadium commander in Rotterdam, the city in which he served as chief of police for nine years. In addition, Paauw was the portfolio holder for professional football on behalf of the Dutch national police for 15 years, and finished his career as chief of police in Amsterdam. Furthermore, his role as a UEFA security advisor since 2004 helped him develop a large international network within football.
Paauw was elected president of the Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB) in 2024, emphasising football’s powerful social role and the conviction that without grassroots football, there is no elite game.
