Aivar Pohlak was a player and a coach before joining the Estonian Football Association (EFA) board in 1993. He was elected vice-president in 2003 and president in 2007.
He is credited with helping to revive football in Estonia following the country's independence, having founded FC Flora Tallinn in 1990 and laid the groundwork for the sport's rapid growth.
In 2012, Pohlak oversaw Estonia’s bid to host its first major international tournament, the UEFA European Under-19 Championship finals. Since then, two more events have been staged in Estonia: the 2018 UEFA Super Cup and the 2020 European Under-17 Championship finals.
