Latvian football is mourning the death of Andrejs Prohorenkovs, who passed away at the age of 48 on 1 May following a battle with illness.

The former Latvia forward made 32 appearances and scored four goals for his national team, notably featuring in all three of their group stage matches at UEFA EURO 2004 – the country's first appearance at a major tournament.

During that tournament, Prohorenkovs set up Māris Verpakovskis for Latvia's first-ever goal at a major finals, during a 2-1 loss to Czechia. His side then earned their maiden point in a 0-0 draw against 2002 FIFA World Cup runners-up Germany, before losing 3-0 to the Netherlands.

During a domestic playing career spanning more than 20 years, Prohorenkovs won Israeli league and cup honours with Maccabi Tel-Aviv, as well as a Latvian title with Liepājas Metalurgs.
