The Stade de Genève plays host to a Group B meeting between Portugal and Italy on Matchday 2 of UEFA Women's EURO 2025 with the sides experiencing contrasting fortunes in their respective openers.

Italy kicked off their tournament with a 1-0 win over Belgium in Sion on 3 July, while Portugal suffered a 0-5 defeat by neighbours Spain in Bern.

Portugal will be unable to reach the quarter-finals if they lose to Italy and Spain avoid defeat by Belgium in the other Group B game on Matchday 2.

Italy will be through to the quarter-finals if they beat Portugal and Belgium do not beat Spain.

Previous meetings

Although this is the first time the two nations have faced off in the final tournament, they have played eight qualifying matches. Italy have won six of those but Portugal did claim one of their two victories in their most recent Women's EURO qualifying meeting, a 1-0 play-off second-leg win during the play-offs for the 2001 edition. However, a 3-0 home victory in the first leg in Florence ensured Italy progressed to the finals.

The teams were also paired together in the qualification campaigns for both the 2011 and the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup, Italy winning all four fixtures, scoring nine goals and conceding just one.

Italy have won all seven meetings since that play-off second-leg defeat in November 2000, including the most recent – a 2-1 win during qualification for the 2020 Algarve Cup.

Form guide

Portugal

Portugal were four goals down at half-time against world champions Spain on Matchday 1, although they were able to stem the flow until conceding a fifth in the 93rd minute. They have now lost six of their seven games at Women's EURO.

Unbeaten Portugal (W5 D1) topped their qualifying group ahead of Northern Ireland, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Malta to advance to the play-offs, where they recorded an 8-1 aggregate victory against Azerbaijan (4-1 a, 4-0 h) before a 3-2 defeat of Czechia (1-1 h, 2-1 a).

Diana Silva, who scored both in the second leg against Czechia, was Portugal's top scorer in qualifying with six goals.

After featuring in both 2017 and 2022, this is Portugal's third Women's EURO appearance; they are yet to progress beyond the group stage.

A 2-1 win over Scotland in the 2017 group stage is Portugal's only Women's EURO victory; their finals record otherwise is D1 L5.

In charge since February 2014, Francisco Neto guided Portugal to their first-ever World Cup in 2023, where they exited at the group stage with the record W1 D1 L1.

Italy

Arianna Caruso's fine strike just before half-time earned Italy a 1-0 victory in their Matchday 1 contest with Belgium, the victory in Sion their first at a Women's EURO since 2017.

Italy are making their 13th Women's EURO appearance after topping Group A1, losing just one of their six games as they finished ahead of Netherlands, Norway and Finland.

With three goals, Manuela Giugliano was Italy's top scorer in qualifying.

Runners-up as hosts in 1993, losing 0-1 to Norway, Italy also reached the final in 1997, going down 0-2 against Germany.

Le Azzurre have featured in all but one of the Women's EURO tournaments since 1984, missing out only in 1995.

Four of their last six participations – including the last two – have ended at the group stage. Their last knockout participation was in 2013, when they reached the quarter-finals.

Two-time World Cup quarter-finalists, Italy finished third in Group G in the most recent tournament in 2023, defeating fourth-placed Argentina (1-0) before losing to group winners Sweden (0-5) and South Africa (2-3), the latter scoring an added-time winner to finish ahead of them.

In charge since September 2023, Italy are led by head coach Andre Soncin.
