The final round of Group B games brings a first UEFA Women's EURO meeting between Spain and Italy in 28 years in Bern.

Spain made it two wins from two after beating Belgium 6-2 on Matchday 2 – the joint highest-scoring game in Women's EURO history – while Italy were pegged back by a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Portugal, although they too remain unbeaten.

Spain are through to the quarter-finals. They will finish first if they avoid defeat by Italy.

Italy will reach the quarter-finals if they avoid defeat by Spain or if Portugal do not beat Belgium in the other Matchday 3 game in Group B. If Italy lose and Portugal win, they will be split for second and third place on overall goal difference, then overall goals scored, then lower disciplinary points then higher position in the overall European Qualifiers phase rankings. Italy will finish first if they win.

Previous meetings

Italy reached their second Women's EURO final with a 2-1 victory over debutants Spain in the 1997 semi-finals. Silvia Fiorini and Carolina Morace had put the Le Azzurre in front inside the first 30 minutes in Lillestrøm, Maria Parejo's late consolation not enough for La Roja.

The pair had also faced off during qualifying for the 1987 and 1991 tournaments, Italy recording two wins amongst two draws.

Paired together in Group A4 of the 2023/24 UEFA Women's Nations League, Italy inflicted the only defeat on eventual champions Spain in the inaugural tournament when they triumphed 3-2 in Pontevedra in December 2023; Aitana Bonmatí's late strike had given Spain a 1-0 victory in Salerno the previous month.

There were also two late goals in the most recent contest between the two – a 1-1 friendly draw in October 2024. Alba Redondo struck for visitors Spain in the 86th minute but the lead only lasted two minutes as Chiara Beccari ensured a share of the spoils in Vicenza.

Italy

On Matchday 1 Italy recorded their first Women's EURO victory since 2017 courtesy of Arianna Caruso's fine strike against Belgium in Sion, and they were minutes away from another 1-0 victory after Player of the Match Cristiana Girelli curled in against Portugal on Matchday 2 before an 89th-minute equaliser in Geneva left Italy's quarter-final hopes in the balance.

Italy are making their 13th Women's EURO appearance after topping Group A1, losing just one of their six games as they finished ahead of Netherlands, Norway and Finland.

With three goals, Manuela Giugliano was Italy's top scorer in qualifying.

Runners-up as hosts in 1993, losing 0-1 to Norway, Italy also reached the final in 1997, going down 0-2 against Germany.

Le Azzurre have featured in all but one of the Women's EURO tournaments since 1984, missing out only in 1995.

Four of their last six participations – including the last two – have ended at the group stage. Their last knockout participation was in 2013, when they reached the quarter-finals.

Two-time World Cup quarter-finalists, Italy finished third in Group G in the most recent tournament in 2023, defeating fourth-placed Argentina (1-0) before losing to group winners Sweden (0-5) and South Africa (2-3), the latter scoring an added-time winner to finish ahead of them.

In charge since September 2023, Italy are led by head coach Andre Soncin.

Spain

Spain have scored 11 goals in their two Group B games, following a 5-0 victory against Portugal with the 6-2 defeat of Belgium. There were seven different scorers in the latter, a competition record, while Spain equalled the single-team record of five scorers. Alexia Putellas had a hand in four goals – two goals and two assists – as captain Irene Paredes, Esther González, Mariona Caldentey and Clàudia Pina also found the net for the world champions in Thun.

Spain won five of their six qualifying games in Group A2 (L1), scoring 18 goals and conceding five in finishing ahead of Denmark, Belgium and Czechia.

Jenni Hermoso and Salma Paralluelo both scored three goals in qualifying as Spain averaged three per game.

Making their fifth Women's EURO appearance in 2025, Spain have never failed to qualify for the knockout stages. They have now reached the quarter-finals in each of the last four editions, including 2025, while that semi-final appearance on debut in 1997 remains their best showing.

The 5-0 victory against Portugal on Matchday 1 is Spain's biggest EURO victory.

Spain won their first-ever senior major international women's tournament thanks to Olga Carmona's first-half strike against England in the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup final in Sydney.

Less than a year later, goals from Bonmatí (32) and Caldentey (53) gave La Roja victory against France in the 2023/24 Women's Nations League final in Seville.

Current head coach Montse Tomé, who had served as an assistant to Jorge Vila at the 2023 World Cup, guided Spain to that Women's Nations League title and then fourth place at the 2024 Olympic Games.
