Form guide

England

Both of England's first two group games were staged in Zurich. Keira Walsh's late strike was not enough to prevent defeat to France in their opener, but Sarina Wiegman's side responded emphatically against Netherlands on Matchday 2 with Lauren James scoring twice (22, 60) and Georgia Stanway (45+2) and Ella Toone (67) once each, Alessia Russo supplying three assists.

England qualified for their tenth finals, and seventh in succession, after finishing runners-up to France in Group A3 (W3 D2 L1), ahead of Sweden and Republic of Ireland.

Russo struck three times during qualifying, one more than team-mate Stanway.

Wiegman's England defeated Germany at Wembley in the final of Women's EURO 2022 to win their first major trophy. Toone (62) put England in front and, though Germany forced extra time, substitute Chloe Kelly scored the winner for the tournament hosts.

England's 8-0 win against Norway in the 2022 group stage is the biggest margin of victory in Women's EURO history.

The Lionesses have also twice been runners-up, losing 3-4 on penalties to Sweden in 1984 after the two-legged final had ended 1-1 on aggregate (0-1 a, 1-0 h), and 2-6 to Germany in the 2009 final in Helsinki.

England have reached at least the semi-finals in three of the last four tournaments.

Following their 2022 success, during which they became the second nation after Germany to go through the group stage without conceding, England reached the final of the 2023 Women's World Cup, losing 0-1 to Spain in Sydney.

Wiegman, in charge since September 2021, is the only coach to win the EURO title with two different countries following her 2017 success with Netherlands.

Wales

Wales lost 0-3 to Netherlands in Lucerne on 5 July in what was their first-ever Women's EURO group game, and their Matchday 2 meeting with France in St. Gallen brought about another milestone when their all-time top scorer Jess Fishlock got their first finals goal. It made the score 1-1, but France subsequently added a further three goals without reply.

In addition to scoring Wales' first goal in a major tournament, Fishlock also became the oldest scorer in Women's EURO history aged 38 years 176 days.

Appointed head coach ahead of qualifying, Rhian Wilkinson led Wales to an unbeaten group stage campaign where they kept four clean sheets in winning four of their six games to finish ahead of Ukraine, Croatia and Kosovo in Group B4.

That took them through to the play-offs, where they squeezed past Slovakia (1-2 a, 2-0 h aet) before a 3-2 aggregate win over Republic of Ireland (1-1 h, 2-1 a) led them to their first major final tournament appearance.

Fishlock, on target in four of six group stage games, was Wales' top scorer during qualifying with six goals.

That was Wales' eighth attempt at qualifying for the finals, while they fell at the final hurdle of qualifying for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup with a 1-2 extra-time defeat by Switzerland in the play-offs.

They took part in the first Women’s Nations League tournament in 2023/24, but picked up just one point from their six games in Group A3 to finish behind Germany, Denmark and Iceland. However, their point was earned in their last group fixture against eight-time European champions Germany.

Former Canadian international Wilkinson was appointed in February 2024.
