Petrie served as the Scottish Football Association (SFA) president from 2019 to 2023, with the highlight of his two terms being Scotland's long-awaited return to a major men’s international tournament after 23 years at UEFA EURO 2020, when Glasgow's Hampden Park hosted four matches.

Petrie, who trained as a chartered accountant before moving into investment banking, had previously served as SFA vice-president between 2011 and 2019, and was chairman of Scottish club Hibernian between 2004 and 2019.

“I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our dear friend Rod Petrie,” said UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin. “We will remember him as a thoughtful and principled man, unwaveringly devoted to the good of the sport and the people in it.

“Rod served Scottish football with distinction, purpose, and quiet strength. His steady leadership and commitment to unity earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues across the European football community.”
