President Čeferin complimented the Football Association of Iceland for its excellent work in improving football infrastructure nationwide, with particular praise for the newly constructed pitch at the national Laugardalsvöllur Stadium. Iceland has successfully optimised several facilities that not only serve local communities and athletes but also withstand some of the world's most extreme weather conditions, with many of these initiatives financially supported by UEFA via the HatTrick programme.
"Football has firmly established itself as Iceland's number one sport, a source of national pride and a great ambassador of this magnificent country," said President Čeferin. "These projects reflect Iceland's vision, dedication, and resilience, laying a strong foundation for the continued growth of football in the country."
Both leaders acknowledged that, although significant progress has been made, further improvements are still needed. President Čeferin emphasised that future investments must extend beyond playing surfaces, highlighting deficiencies in dressing rooms and related amenities that currently fall short of international standards.
"When football thrives, everyone benefits – from young people and local communities to society as a whole. But football cannot do everything alone," added President Čeferin. "Continued support from local and public authorities, as well as partners, is essential to secure both the present and the future of the game. And some of these gaps, such as competition facilities at the national stadium, must be addressed with great urgency."
President Čeferin also praised the excellent relationship between UEFA and the Icelandic FA, as well as the relationship between their presidents, which is built on mutual trust and cooperation. He concluded by expressing confidence in Iceland's ability to take the next crucial steps in upgrading its facilities to the high standards, reinforcing its position as an inspirational football nation.
