During his playing career, Jenei was a skilful midfielder who earned six caps for Romania and represented his country at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games.
However, Jenei's greatest achievements came as coach of Steaua București, who he led to a famous European Cup triumph in 1986 – the first for an eastern European club – as they beat Barcelona on penalties after the final ended 0-0. Over multiple spells at the club, he also won six Romanian top-flight titles and four Romanian Cups.
In the first of two stints as Romania head coach, Jenei led his national side to their first FIFA World Cup for 20 years, becoming the first man to take Romania past the group stage at the tournament when they reached the last 16 at Italia '90.
Taking up the role again in 2000, Jenei also oversaw Romania's first win at a UEFA European Championship, a 3-2 defeat of England helping his team progress to the quarter-finals.
