German football mourns Anouschka Bernhard

Bernhard appeared 47 times for Germany's women's national team, making her debut in 1991 in a 2-0 win over China. In 1995, she won the Women's EURO with a Germany team that also finished runners-up at the Women's World Cup the same year.

At club level, she enjoyed success with FSV Frankfurt, German champions in 1995 and 1998 and cup winners in 1996.

After her playing career, Bernhard remained deeply involved in football. From 1997 to 2002, she coached FSV Frankfurt, before working as youth coordinator at Hertha BSC between 2003 and 2011. She completed her coaching licence in 2009, and in 2011 joined the German Football Association (DFB) as a coach, leading both the Under-16 and Under-17 women's national teams. She won the Women's Under-17 EURO four times with the latter.

In 2020, Bernhard joined the Schleswig-Holstein Football Association and continued to work with the DFB in other roles, advising on technical issues related to the education, training and development of coaches at regional level.

"We remember Anouschka Bernhard as an exceptional footballer and a wonderful and successful coach, but above all as a loveable person and a great personality," said Heike Ullrich, DFB vice-president for women's and girls' football. "Anouschka made her mark – on football pitches around the world and in the hearts of countless people. We will never forget her."
