Legendary Hungary and Újpest Dózsa forward László Fazekas has passed away after a long illness, aged 78.

Fazekas made his Újpest debut in 1965 and helped them become a dominant force domestically over the next 15 years, scoring 252 goals as the club won nine league titles and three Hungarian Cups. In Europe, Fazekas played in both legs of the final of the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup (a predecessor of the UEFA Europa League) against Newcastle and the 1974 European Cup semi-final against eventual winners Bayern München.

Representing his country, Fazekas scored 24 goals in 92 caps for Hungary, appearing in two World Cups and one European Championship. He was also part of Hungary's Olympic gold medal winning team in 1968.

Fazekas ended his playing career in Belgium and took up numerous coaching roles there after his retirement in 1985.
