On 4 September, Wear Your Kit to Work Day was held in Iceland for the first time, as people across the country turned up to their workplaces wearing their favourite football shirts to raise money for charity.

The initiative saw the Football Association of Iceland team up with the charity Children with Cancer to organise a fundraising day. Businesses, schools and the wider community in Iceland responded well to the initiative, with social media feeds filled with photos of people wearing football kit.

Gréta Ingþórsdóttir, managing director of Children with Cancer, was thrilled with the positive reaction.

“We are hearing from workplaces, schools and many people that they are participating. It was not the aim of the project to get through to everybody in the first part, but this has gone way beyond our expectations."

Icelandic clubs get behind the project

The previous weekend, at matches of the men’s and women’s top domestic leagues, all players, coaches, staff and referees walked out onto the pitch wearing jerseys that mean something to them.

Arnór Ingvi Traustason of KR Reykjavík, a former national team player, chose an England strip from Iceland’s 1-0 victory over the home team at Wembley in 2024.

“This is my favourite kit,” he explained. “I swapped shirts with Declan Rice, and a great story behind it as well is that me and Johann Berg Gudmundsson are the only [Iceland] players who have beaten England twice.”
