New UEFA VAR Centre opens ahead of Champions League kick-off

About UEFA

The new UEFA VAR Centre is ready for action following its official inauguration ahead of UEFA Champions League matchday one on Tuesday.

The new UEFA VAR Centre

UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin opened the new UEFA VAR Centre at our headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, alongside deputy general secretary Giorgio Marchetti, director of refereeing Roberto Rosetti and the video assistant referees appointed for this week’s matches.

Combining cutting-edge technology, greater operational efficiency and referee development in one centralised environment, the new VAR Centre will support clear decision-making and enhance the quality and consistency of officiating across UEFA competitions.

"The new UEFA VAR Centre brings our technology, expertise and officials together in one environment, helping our teams prepare consistently, collaborate effectively and make better decisions under pressure," said Roberto Rosetti. "It reflects UEFA’s commitment to innovation, referee development and the highest possible standards of consistency across European football for every competition."

Bringing together 11 video operation rooms in one centralised space, the centre features upgraded technical infrastructure, including improved power, cooling and connectivity systems. Fibre-optic cabling links the centre to stadiums across Europe, enabling more than 220 matches per season to be supported from our Nyon HQ.

By bringing VAR teams together in a consistent working environment, the centre will strengthen collaboration, preparation and knowledge sharing between match officials, while helping to ensure the uniform application of UEFA VAR protocols.

Beyond match operations, the VAR Centre will also welcome UEFA member associations, partners, schools and other stakeholders, offering visitors an insight into the technology, expertise and preparation behind elite-level officiating.

Partnership with STRAUSS

Earlier this week, UEFA also announced a new partnership with STRAUSS, our first official refereeing partner. STRAUSS branding features in the VAR centre and on pitch-side VAR monitors and referees’ match and training clothing.
